Does minimal space, lack of storage and no preparation areas sound familiar?
A small kitchen can be a difficult room to make the most of.
Ideally we’d all love a kitchen with plenty of space and a large enough fridge to store fresh groceries and meal leftovers for the family. A large island in the middle, where guests can comfortably sit around and socialise would be perfect, along with the cupboard space to store all of our top of the range kitchen appliances. However, in reality the majority of us don’t have the luxury of a large kitchen.
If your kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your home like it is for me, then finding the best ways to maximise space is essential. A small kitchen doesn’t need to feel like a cupboard, with careful planning and clever space saving solutions, every square inch can be made to work. I’ve come up with 7 ways to help you make the most out of limited kitchen space!
1. Kitchen Cabinets
A neutral tone in your kitchen will work well to unify space without overwhelming it; this can be achieved by introducing under cabinet lighting to softly illuminate your work spaces. When choosing the cabinets you want to buy, determine the purpose for each.
Choose roll-outs and deeper drawers to create more storage and help you keep organised.
Browse our Silestone worktops to help complement that neutral tone in your kitchen.
2. Incorporate a breakfast bar
By incorporating a breakfast bar in your small kitchen, you will not only save space by not having a table but also create extra working space. Fit a length of shaped granite worktop to a run of units which instantly creates an eating area.
3. Backsplash
To help open up your kitchen, a clear glass tiled backsplash will reflect the light of the room creating the illusion of spaciousness. Also a mosaic border of small copper tiles will complement a neutral colour scheme, making your kitchen appear brighter.
4. Space Saving Sink
For a busy kitchen with limited counter space, a deep sink is essential. Dirty dishes and prep items can be dropped into the sink and kept out of the way.
5. Open kitchen shelving
It’s very important to minimise clutter in your kitchen. First of all get rid of items you don’t use on a regular basis, every item needs a home and to be put back there after use! Open kitchen shelving can look modern and informal and will help you save up valuable worktop space in your small kitchen. Open shelves are also a great way to show off your attractive crockery and glassware.
6. Integrated appliances
Integrated appliances are a great way to save space in your small kitchen. If you struggle with counter top space, then integrated appliances will slot between cabinets to save space. You can also fit them on the wall rather than beneath a worktop; keeping ovens and microwaves looking tidy and out of the way.
7. The Magic Triangle
Embrace the magic triangle by placing the stove, refrigerator and sink within a step or two from one another. By organising your appliances well, this will make your kitchen efficient, despite being small.
